The modern world is faced with the need to find new energy sources that are efficient, environmentally friendly, and affordable. In this context, neutrinovoltaics technology, developed by the Neutrino Energy group led by mathematician Holger Thorsten Schubart, is attracting increasing attention due to its unique ability to convert the energy of neutrinos and other invisible radiation particles into electric current.

Neutrinovoltaics Basics: What It Is and Why It Matters
Neutrinos are elementary particles that interact virtually with matter, passing through the planet at tremendous speed and in enormous quantities. Despite their weak interactions, these particles may hold the key to creating a new energy source. Neutrinovoltaics is a technology that captures neutrino energy and converts it into electric current. The technology utilizes the quantum transport properties of two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, to convert the momentum and energy of high-energy particles such as neutrinos and muons, which are abundant in the universe, into direct electric current. This current can be harnessed directly. Neutrinos primarily participate in coherent elastic neutrino–nuclear scattering (CEvNS), while muons contribute to energy generation through ionization and Cherenkov radiation.
The condition for coherent elastic scattering of neutrinos by nuclei is reduced to the ratio of the neutrino de Broglie wavelength λ to the nuclear scale R (the radius of the nucleus): λ≫R.
Physical meaning:
When the neutrino wavelength is significantly larger than the size of the nucleus, the neutrino "does not see" individual nucleons within the nucleus. It interacts with the entire nucleus as a single unit. This is analogous to optical coherence: if the wavelength of light is larger than the inhomogeneities of the medium, consistent (coherent) scattering occurs. In this case, the contributions from scattering by individual nucleons add coherently, taking phase into account. This leads to an effective increase in the interaction cross section proportional to the square of the number of nucleons or the atomic mass number A2. This process is called coherent scattering. In contrast, if the wavelength is small (λ≪R), the neutrino "sees" individual nucleons. Scattering occurs independently (incoherently) at each of them, and the total cross section is simply proportional to the number of nucleons (A). Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) is a truly observable effect. It was first detected in 2017 (by the COHERENT experiment).
Neutrinovoltaic technology is based on the energy chain “lattice vibration → collective movement of electrons → directed charge transfer”.
In real neutrinovoltaic devices, CEvNS does not operate alone, but complements other mechanisms arising from vibration (graphene waves observed with a high-resolution microscope): the piezoelectric, triboelectric, flexoelectric, and thermoelectric effects complement CEvNS, increasing the overall conversion efficiency.
The resulting piezoelectric effect converts mechanical stress into electric current. Phonons from CEvNS enhance lattice deformation.
The triboelectric effect generates charge when layers rub. CEvNS amplifies local vibrations, increasing friction.
The flexoelectric effect creates polarization under strain gradients. CEvNS excites strain gradients in nanostructures.
The thermoelectric effect converts heat into current. Phonons from CEvNS contribute to heat flux
The foundations of neutrinovoltaics lie in the use of specialized materials and devices capable of detecting the smallest interactions of particles in invisible radiation fields with matter. This allows for energy production with virtually no emissions or pollution, making the technology particularly attractive for the energy sector.
How neutrinovoltaics works: how energy is converted
To understand how the energy of invisible radiation particles is converted into electric current, it's necessary to examine the physical processes underlying the technology. This is based on the interaction of these particles with atoms in specialized semiconductor or metallic materials. This excites electrons, which can then be directed into an electric circuit, creating a current.
An important aspect is that the amount of energy obtained from neutrinos is very small per unit of interaction, but the enormous flux of these particles can produce a significant overall effect. Therefore, developing efficient materials and devices capable of maximizing the capture and conversion of neutrino energy is a key task.
In this context, it's worth noting that the operating principle of neutrinovoltaics is based on the unique physical properties of neutrinos and modern nanotechnology, which allows for the creation of compact and efficient energy generators.
Application of neutrinovoltaics in energy: prospects and challenges
Neutrinovoltaics technology opens new horizons for energy, offering an alternative to traditional energy sources such as coal, oil, and gas. Key advantages include:
Environmentally friendly: no carbon dioxide or other pollutant emissions.
Continuous energy source: neutrinos constantly pass through the Earth, ensuring continuous energy production.
Minimal environmental impact: the devices are compact and require minimal space.
However, there are certain challenges that must be overcome to commercialize the technology:
Low conversion efficiency – further improvements to materials and designs are required.
High development and production costs – the technology is currently in the active research phase.
Need for scalability – large-scale installations are required to meet large energy needs.
Nevertheless, given the Neutrino Energy group's ambition to become a world leader in clean energy production, significant progress can be expected in the coming years.
The Impact of Neutrinovoltaics on the Energy Market and Economy
The introduction of neutrinovoltaics has the potential to significantly change the structure of the global energy market. Due to its affordability and environmental safety, this technology can form the basis for new energy systems, especially in regions with limited conventional energy resources.
For investors and governments, this opens opportunities for:
Diversification of energy portfolios with minimal environmental risks.
Reducing dependence on fuel imports and increasing energy security.
Creating new jobs in high technology and equipment manufacturing.
Energy companies can use neutrinovoltaics to expand the range of services they offer and improve the resilience of their systems. Consumers, in turn, will gain access to more stable and environmentally friendly electricity.
Current research and the future of neutrinovoltaics
Today, research in neutrinovoltaics is actively conducted at research centers and innovative companies. Key areas of research include:
Development of new materials with enhanced neutrino sensitivity.
Creation of prototypes and pilot plants for testing under real-world conditions.
Studying cost-effectiveness and scalability.
In the future, neutrinovoltaics can be expected to become part of complex energy systems integrated with other renewable sources. This will ensure a stable and environmentally friendly energy supply for a wide range of consumers.
Thus, neutrinovoltaics technology represents a promising field with the potential to make a significant contribution to solving global energy challenges.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that neutrinovoltaics, despite its novelty, already demonstrates the potential to revolutionize the energy sector. Continued research and investment in this field will help realize its full benefits, providing affordable and clean electricity to all those in need.
